Louisville Parks and Recreation is hosting a soccer street festival for the two World Cup Semi-Final games and the final.
The department has secured a large public viewing HD screen, 17’ x 10’, for the street festival and will be placed on Jefferson Street, in front of Metro Hall while blocking off some of the lanes of traffic between 5th and 6th on Jefferson. The steps of Metro Hall can be used for seating. The television feed will be provided by the local FOX affiliate, WDRB directly to the screen.
The first Semi-Final is scheduled for Tuesday, 10 July 2018 at 2 p.m. The plan is to block the area off by 12:30 p.m. in preparation for the live showing, and open up the area by 4:30 p.m. (no later than 5 p.m.). The same schedule will follow for the second Semi-Final on Wednesday, July 11.
The Final is scheduled for Sunday, 15 July 2018 at 11 a.m. Being a weekend day we will block off the area by 8 a.m. to get ready for a bigger day with the Final. The area will remain blocked off till 3 p.m. There will be food trucks available, a small-sided soccer set up for youth games and knock-abouts, radar gun to gauge dead ball speeds, juggling competition, and vendors that may wish to sell their fare.
The goal of the showings is to create a family friendly (no alcohol), welcoming festival atmosphere where the soccer fan can come celebrate wearing, waving, and sounding off their support for any country they choose to. This is a great way to bring the community together in a safe and fun atmosphere while watching the most viewed single event, the World Cup Final, in a public square. Fan festivals such as this have become a standard around the world and as a diverse city we should not be left behind.
Attendance at this event is free to everyone.
