St. Joseph Children’s Home (SJCH) is a nonprofit child caring facility licensed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. SJCH was founded in 1849; SJCH began as a result of members of the German-American Catholic parishes wishing to care for orphans whose parents died in the cholera epidemic that started the year before. Originally called the St. Joseph Orphanage, SJCH has served over 75,000 boys and girls. SJCH has consistently adapted to the needs of the community and now serves children through 3 programs, the Therapeutic Residential Treatment Program, the Therapeutic Foster Care and Adoption Program, and the Child Development Center. SJCH serves children in all counties of Kentucky, regardless of nationality, race, or creed.
The Therapeutic Residential Treatment Program is licensed to serve 40 children at a time. The children come from home environments threatened by neglect, abuse, violence, and poverty. Many of the children have been in emergency shelters, psychiatric hospitals, residential facilities, and multiple foster homes. The children have experienced malnutrition, insufficient medical/ dental care, and/or limited social interactions.
The Therapeutic Foster Care and Adoption Program serves about 65 each year. They are victims of trauma and have suffered neglect, physical, mental and/or sexual abuse. About 32% of the children served come from the Therapeutic Residential Treatment Program at SJCH, and all are wards of the State and are referred to SJCH by the Department of Community Based Services. In 2010, SJCH TFC facilitated the largest number of adoptions of any private child caring agency in the state.
The Child Development Center is licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, serving approx. 170 children through 5th grade. The CDC participates in the STARS for KIDS NOW, a voluntary above-licensing quality assurance program operated by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
